Il y a presque une décennie, je suis tombé sur un blog de baskets, à l’époque nouveau, appelé Sneaker News. Le site avait une sous-page intitulée « WDYWT - What Did You Wear Today » [Qu’avez vous porté aujourd’hui] qui permettait aux passionnés de sneakers de tous les coins de partager ce qu’ils avaient aux pieds. Au fil du temps, j’ai développé une liste de favoris parmi ceux qui postaient régulièrement. Javier Texas Teacher avait une collection de Jordan de malade qui, depuis, a évolué vers une sélection bien plus éclectique. Les choix quotidiens de Tony Diamonds venaient d’une série ridicule de Dunks du type skateboarding ainsi que sportswear. Deux autres mecs ont attiré mon attention, initialement parce qu’ils étaient du Canada, mais aussi parce que ces gars avaient des petites perles. Les baskets des Cid the Kicks étaient en général bien usées, un changement rafraîchissant des chaussures sans plis qui dominent les réseaux sociaux et un signe certain que ses Nikes avaient du vécu. Il y avait aussi Toddy Flores, surnommé Kid Kicks, qui portait tout, des Superstars aux Jack Purcells, des éditions limitées impossibles à trouver aux « general releases », accessibles à tout le monde.

Quelques diplômes, un boulot, et un déménagement à Montréal plus tard, le nom de Toddy était souvent mentionné dans les cercles d’amateurs de baskets. Vu de l’extérieur, il semble mener une vie de rêve : une famille affectueuse, plusieurs entreprises florissantes, une carrière de DJ qui l’a vu ouvrir pour des artistes comme Dave Chappelle… et des baskets, beaucoup beaucoup de baskets (et non, ce n’est pas une faute de frappe). Les jaloux sont envieux, et pour quelqu’un qui a un travail aussi public que Toddy, on s’attendrait à entendre quelques ragots. Je ne supposerais pas qu’on n’ait jamais dit du mal du doyen de la communauté de sneakers Montréalaise, mais je peux témoigner que ça n’a jamais été fait en ma présence. Malgré un emploi du temps chargé, mon gars a fait en sorte de pouvoir pour me rencontrer à trois occasions différentes pour ce projet. On a mené notre entrevue au restaurant Junior’s, et quand j’ai remarqué que le son était dominé par une symphonie de réfrigérateurs industriels, Toddy était réellement excité à l’idée de tout refaire. « Je pourrais parler de basket éternellement », me réassure-t-il, et on a bien failli, en faisant plus de 20 minutes de notre deuxième entrevue avant de remarquer qu’on n’enregistrait pas.         

Durant les premiers moments de notre entrevue initiale, Toddy avait l’air un peu agité. Je ne pouvais pas dire si son tumulte était du à une surabondance de responsabilités, ou au fait qu’un étranger s’immisçait dans son enfance. Quelque chose a changé quand on a commencé à parler des Philippines. Une posture raide cède la place à un comportement plus détendu, alors que Toddy raconte la migration de sa famille à Montréal, s’installant initialement à Cotes-des-Neiges avant de déménager à la Rive Sud. Malgré son départ à l’âge de deux ans, l’influence philippine sur l’identité du propriétaire de club est palpable. « En grandissant, on a fait en sorte de ne pas oublier nos racines », explique-t-il. « Mes parents ont essayé de nous apprendre, ou nous encourageaient à toujours parler, notre langue maternelle ». La maison des Flores reste décorée d’artefacts et de rappels culturels de leur pays natal, une esthétique qui s’étend au restaurant Junior’s. Perché sur un des murs de l’établissement, une fourchette et une cuillère en bois symbolise le coté communautaire de casser la croute, un aspect important de la tradition philippine. L’ardoise en dessous des ustensiles croisés lit « sarap », tagalog pour savoureux ou délicieux.

Le décor de Junior’s donne à l’endroit un air de patio, une extension de la cour-arrière chez quelqu’un. La configuration est probablement ce qui contribue à l’atmosphère accueillante du restaurant. A un moment donné, durant notre rencontre, la porte s’ouvre soudainement. Un étranger rentre et commence à regarder autour de lui, jusqu'à ce que Toddy lui offre de l’aide. « Oh, je passais juste par là et j’ai vu toutes ces chaussures », explique l’homme, en pointant à d’innombrables pompes étalées sur le bar. « Je suis curieux… Qu’est ce que c’est que vous faites ? » Toddy et moi, on rigole et on lui explique qu’on travaille sur un projet de sneakers, et on capte sa réaction – un mélange égal d’intrigue et de confusion. Des hommes adultes pris dans une réminiscence sur leurs premières paires, et toutes celles qu’ils ont acheté depuis. Un de ces deux hommes les raccroche, après plus de 30 ans de chasse, de collection, et d’usage. « Je ne sais pas si j’aurais jamais complètement fini, mais il faut définitivement que je prenne du recul », reflète Toddy. Quand je lui demande pourquoi, il commence à parler d’une nouvelle phase dans sa vie, ce qui m’a rappelé ce que Yassin m’avait dit quand je lui ai posé une question similaire : « les priorités ». En fin de compte, on aura toujours Paris, je suppose.

Almost a decade ago, I stumbled onto a then-new footwear blog called Sneaker News. The site ran a sub-page titled WDYWT - What Did You Wear Today, which allowed sneaker enthusiasts from all over to share what they had on feet. Over time, I developed a list of favorites among those who posted regularly. Javier Texas Teacher had a crazy collection of Jordans, which has since evolved into a much more eclectic line-up. Tony Diamonds’ daily picks drew from a ridiculous Dunk spread of both the skateboarding and sportswear variety. A couple of other cats caught my eye, initially because they were Canada-heads, but also because these dudes packed gems. Cid the Kicks’ sneakers usually showed heavy wear, a refreshing departure from creaseless shoes that dominate social media and a sure sign his Nikes had experienced life. There was also Toddy Flores, who went by the alias Kid Kicks, and rocked everything from Superstars to Jack Purcells, impossible to find limited editions to general releases.

A couple of degrees, a job, and a move to Montreal later, Toddy’s name came up frequently in sneaker circles. From the outside looking in, he appears to lead a dream-life: a loving family, multiple successful businesses, a DJ career that’s seen him open for the likes of Dave Chappelle… and kicks, a lot lot of kicks (and no, that’s not a typo). Jealous ones envy, and for someone whose work is as public as Toddy’s, you’d expect to hear some chatter. I won’t assume no one’s bad-mouthed the elder statesman of the Montreal sneaker community, but I can testify it’s never happened in my presence. Despite a Big Pun type heavy sched, my man made time to meet with me on three separate occasions for this project. We conducted our interview at Junior’s restaurant, and when I realized the audio was dominated by a symphony of industrial fridges, Toddy was genuinely excited at the prospect of a redo. “I could talk about kicks forever,” he assured me, and we damn near did, going 20 plus minutes into our second sit down before realizing the recorder was not on. 

During the opening moments of our initial interview, Toddy seemed a little fidgety. I couldn’t tell if his restlessness was due to a glut of responsibilities, or to having a stranger pry into his childhood. Something shifted though when we started talking about the Philippines. An upright posture gives way to a more relaxed demeanor, as Toddy recounts his family’s migration to Montreal, initially settling in Cotes-Des-Neiges then moving to the South Shore. Despite relocating at age two, the pinoy influence on the club owner’s identity is palpable. “Growing up, we made sure that we didn’t forget our roots,” he explains. “My parents tried to teach us, or always keep us talking, our native language.” The Flores household remains decorated with artifacts and cultural reminders of their homeland, an aesthetic that extends to Junior’s restaurant. Perched on one of the eatery’s walls are a wooden fork and spoon, to symbolize the communal aspect of breaking bread, an important part of Filipino tradition. The chalkboard under the crossed utensils reads “sarap,” Tagalog for tasty or delicious.

unior’s decor gives the spot a bit of a patio feel, an extension of someone’s backyard. The set up is probably what contributes to the restaurant’s homely and inviting feel. At one point during our talk, the door swings open. A stranger walks in and starts looking around, until Toddy offers assistance. “Oh, I was just walking by and I saw all these shoes,” the man explains, pointing to the countless kicks sprawled across the bar. “I’m curious… what do you guys do?” Toddy and I share a laugh, explain that we are working on a sneaker project, and take in the man’s reaction – an even mix of intrigue and confusion. Grown men reminiscing over their first pairs, and all the subsequent ones they’ve since purchased. One of said two men is hanging them up, after 30 plus year of hunting, collecting, and wearing. “I don’t know that I’ll ever be done, but I definitely need to take a step back,” Toddy reflects. When I ask why, he begins to speak of a new phase in his life, and I’m reminded of something Yassin told me when I’d asked him a similar question: “Priorities.” In the end, we’ll always have Paris, I suppose.

Toddy and Jojo Flores

The story behind Griffintown's newest establishment is simple. Two of the hardest working brothers out there, Jojo and Toddy Flores, alongside Julian Somera and David Pendon set out to accomplish a vision of making Filipino meals more available to the Montreal public, and that's just what they did. Flavors from the motherland of the Philippines are layered down on the table to ensure that your experience at Junior is as satisfactory as being in south east Asia. 

As soon as you sit down, you immediately notice the array of the condiments on the table which, as we found out, take the meal to a whole other level. The musical ambiance makes you feel at ease in a fast paced, busy, little spot -- you won't be hearing your everyday radio hits in here. After all, two of Montreal's most active DJs are behind it! Filippino cuisine is influenced by it's past heavily. Many cultures blend in to make what is known as Pinoy cuisine, making a melting pot of various flavors and techniques to give you a truly unique approach to a meal.

After trying pretty much the whole menu, we noticed that we hadn't said much to each other other than asking to pass a sauce or thanking the waiter for dropping us off a new dish faster than we could finish the previous one, always a sign of a good meal. Everything was spot on and left us wondering when the next time we returned would be. Our table came to a pretty unanimous decision that the chicken Adobo took home the first place dish. That dish consists of braised chicken in a coconut sauce, which took me back to south east Asia in a heartbeat. It was a tough call because everything else tied for a close 2nd.  The fish, the fried pork and pork Adobo, the noodle dish and greens were all amazing. Not to mention, Toddy graciously told our table that the menu is on the rise and will be getting some new additions shortly.

Since this spot is only open in the evenings, the kitchen crew spends their day's preparing every element so that your food can be made for you upon order and delivered to your table in the time you want it to take. I think what I liked most is that Jojo and Toddy took our orders. Not only did they take the time to explain to us every item and make recommendations, they took the time to hear us out and get our feedback, which is beyond crucial for a new restaurant. You're always looking to improve, which means you gotta keep your ear to the street! The drink menu is also very on point and filled with craft beers. Toddy recommended the house pilsner, which was awesome and locally brewed.

All in all, they came, they saw, they conquered. And it shows...

A vision and some hard work really does pays off. Junior Filipino is here to stay. Don't just check it out, dive in to it! It's the most satisfaction you will get out of trying something that is probably new to you, as it was to us. They're open Wednesday and Thursday from 17:30 to 23:00, Friday and Saturday until 00:00.
